Renowned for being one of the world’s best-known interpreters of the title role in Porgy and Bess, SFC Alvy Powell has won acclaim for his performances both at home and abroad. Singing the role over 2500 times, he has performed “Porgy” with such companies as La Scala, New York City Opera (PBS Live At Lincoln Center), and San Francisco Opera.

SFC Alvy Powell first came into the national spotlight singing The Star Spangled Banner for the inauguration of President George Herbert Bush. He was a featured performer for the 60th wedding anniversary of George and Barbara Bush at the White House, and as a favorite of the Ford family, was asked to sing for the funerals of both President Gerald R. Ford and First Lady Betty Ford.
